Civic Hack Hours was created by the leadership at Hacker Fund and Hack for LA as an after school program devoted to teaching Los Angeles High school students technical skills to solve the city's biggest issues using city data!
The program will consist of 16 weekly sessions ending with a Demo Day on May 18, 2016. Every Wednesday from 6pm-8pm starting February 2016, mentors from Hacker Fund and Hack for LA community will teach students from surrounding high schools near Downtown Los Angeles about the following keys areas in civic hacking:
1. Git 101
2. City Data / APIs
3. Open Source Projects
We have created 16 sessions. We have space for 20 students in each session. You can attend more than one session but you must have (1) claimed a ticket for that session on Eventbrite (2) provided a Parent Packet that was signed by your parent through HelloSign (3) valid school ID or the equivalient.
Vyki co-founded Compiler LA, a tech consultancy dedicated to building a better Los Angeles. Previously Vyki worked at NationBuilder building a National Voter file, and the City of Santa Monica helping to launch their Open Data Initiative. She also built Onebox, an open source ruby gem, with RailGirls Summer of Code.
Alex Singer is a Developer Advocate at Twitter, where he helps to foster and support a community of mobile developers using Fabric - Twitter's set of developer tools. Previously, Alex worked as a software engineer at a healthcare analytics company in Boston and holds a degree in Computer Engineering from Tufts University. You can find him on Twitter @alexjsinger.
Emily Sheehan (@happycamper) is a Partner Engineer at Twitter with a focus on Gnip enterprise support. She's been in the thriving Boulder, Colorado tech scene since graduating with an engineering degree has been teaching herself to code over the last year. Passionate about traveling and the music community, she uses Twitter to stay connected locally, nationally and globally.
The studios is a home for people’s ideas and products to come to life. The studio was formed on the basis of three pillars: product, business, and culture. The idea was that entrepreneurs can create successful businesses through passion, problem solving and continuous education, while taking care of the world and their community.
